A Cathedral Tentacular

This series of drawings by Sarah Gittins is the result of a commission from A+E, the art and ecology programme at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. They look through a regenerative lens at the Cathedral grounds, buildings and community asking the following questions:

• How can this place support multispecies flourishing?
• How can the Cathedral respond to the triple crises of climate change, species loss and wider environmental collapse?
• In what small but significant ways can the Cathedral be a beacon through difficult times to address contemporary environmental and social injustices?

Some of the images show ways that the Cathedral community have already undertaken action to support human and more-than-human flourishing and some images envision additional forms of mitigation and adaptation in response to the climate and ecological crisis.

Sarah Gittins is a visual artist working across a variety of media, with a particular focus on drawing and printmaking. Her work explores issues of social and ecological justice, with a current emphasis on issues of climate change, land use and food sustainability. Sarah’s images create a space where the activities of everyday life (in western culture) encounter incidents of (global) environmental concern, bringing those issues which are often pushed to the edges of consciousness into the here and now of personal awareness.

Sarah is interested in the capacity of image-making to enable engagement, conversation and action for change. With this in mind recent years have seen more performative appoaches emerge within her solo work, and in collaborative projects made together with the artist Jonathan Baxter. Sarah and Jonathan are currently collaborating on Dundee Urban Orchard (DUO) a public art and horticulture project reimagining Dundee as an ‘orchard city’.

This exhibition is free.  Opening times are 10am-5pm Tues-Sat, closing for lunch from 1-2pm, and 12-5pm Sunday.  It will also close during other A+E events and workshops; see What's On for more details.
